window slug Pam

Posted by Picasa Upper floor window of Hall's Bookshop with reflection of pigeon.

In the bed which I am turning over for the Autumn I recoil at the sight of an enormous  slug. It seems to glower at me.  Slugs are not my favourite creatures. To my relief this one turns out to be the vestiges of a rotting courgette or zucchini. I bury it with  special pleasure.

Inscribed on a bench in Calverley Precinct. "Pam. Born to shop. 1950 - 1997."

For a moment there I thought you meant you found a slug in a bed - the kind with sheets, that people sleep in! I doubt even a rotting zucchini would be much better in that situation.

Quite daring that memorial line - a little ambiguity. I once saw an English B-feature movie (in the days when the cinema used to do double features). In a small village a woman had just picked some wild mushrooms and somebody said they could be toadstools. "Don't be silly," she said. Next shot: a tombstone with dates, name and the judgement "She was always right".

Like Anonymous I too envisaged a bed with sheets. In fact I was racking my brains to work out what the occupants were doing eating zucchini in bed!

Saw the image and just knew that was Halls bookshop (an old haunt from my college days).

I wonder what Pam would have thought of the inscription?!!
