salad, bollards, kiss

Posted by Picasa
Two fat lettuces ready for the table.

They are painting the bollards in the pedestrian precinct opposite Royal Victoria Place. The colour is the pleasant tone of burgundy that is the corporate colour of Tunbridge Wells. It is, in fact the colour of aged Burgundy wine, but the bouquet is just paint.

The buds of the sow thistle, just about to open, are like pursed lips on the point of blowing a kiss.

Vosne Romanée, Richebourg or Chambertin?

Gevrey Chambertin is what I had in mind. It tends to be deeper in colour than its rivals from Chambolle-Mussigny.The 1970 vintage has remarkable purple undertones which are reflected, paradoxically in a lilly-of-the-valley nose, and resonates, I have found, quite wonderfully with the first of Erik Satie's Six Gnossiennes.
